Learning Objective #1: Discuss effects of Reiki therapy on pain management in post-operative women | |||
Learning Objective #2: Contrast two nursing methods (including Reiki) on anxiety in post-operative women |
Reiki is a holistic modality (an energy therapy, relaxation technique) that involves the use of hands for the intent to help or heal. Reiki energy healing includes the ideas of body, mind and spirit connection to restore the body’s energy to a state of balance. There is growing consciousness in the United States of Reiki usefulness to reduce pain and anxiety, with little evidence of Reiki efficacy in hospitalized patients. The purpose of this research was to compare two different nursing methods (including Reiki) on anxiety and pain in women hospitalized for abdominal hysterectomy. Rogerian theory (The Rogerian Science of Unitary Human Beings) which includes energy fields as the fundamental units of an individual's environment, served as the conceptual framework. Methodology included an experimental approach, subjects recruited in the physician's office and random assignment to an experimental or control group. Experimental group patients received Reiki at planned intervals, pre and post operatively, during hospitalization. Data collection for both groups included pain assessments, using the Numeric Pain Rating Scale, and anxiety level, using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, at planned intervals. Preliminary results indicate that the women are between 40 and 52 years of age, the mean time of their illness is 20 months (range = 2-36). The length of time in surgery has been greater for the control group. Complete comparisons will be reported at convention.
