Learning Objective #2: n/a |
Purpose: To determine if the availability of web-based telehealth nurse support has an effect on psychological and physiological outcomes, support, satisfaction, usage, and communication in persons with cardiovascular (CV) disease who use the Internet.
Research Questions(s): Two research questions related to differences in psychological outcomes, physiological outcomes, support, and satisfaction between persons with cardiovascular disease who receive Internet-based Nurse Support or are Self-Care. Three research questions related to the process of support, including usage of the site and patient and nurse communication.
Framework: The Online Social Support Theory (LaCoursiere, 2001)
Methods: A Pretest-Posttest Comparative Control Group Repeated Measures design was employed. Participants were 144 persons with cardiovascular disease with an age range of 21-79 years old from four continents who were Internet users. Participants were randomly assigned to one of the two groups: (1) The Nurse Support group, which included access to the intervention, Internet-based nurse support delivered at a distance, in a web-based group forum. (2) The Self-Care group, which included access to web links only. At the end of 6 and 12 weeks, posttest data were obtained.
Results and Conclusions: Pending. Data has been collected, and is currently being analyzed via Multivariate Analysis of Covariance (MANCOVA). Analysis is expected to be completed by March 2003.
Implications for Nursing Practice and Knowledge Development in Nursing: The results of this study will help to quantify the needs of nurses who are planning interventions related to telehealth services. The study will generate normative data related to physiological and psychological outcomes, support, satisfaction, and communication that can be used to plan appropriate nursing interventions for land- or -distance- based support groups. The data may also be utilized on a larger scale to assess feasibility for future programs, and support with other high morbidity diseases.
