Knowledge of Today's Women, Ages 50 and Above, Regarding Breast Cancer Treatment Options

Amy Tallackson, N/A, Office of Nursing Research, Office of Nursing Research, University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, ND, USA

The purpose of this study is to determine the knowledge base regarding breast cancer diagnosis and treatment options of women who are actively involved with their health. Because current public education focuses on early detection and prevention, I think there will be a lack of sufficient evidence that women have knowledge of their treatment choices. Are they passive and trust their doctor's views on what treatment should be performed? Or do they ask questions, keep up to date on the latest treatment options and present their desired options to the physician. According to Orem's self-care model, man is reflected as self-reliant and responsible for self-care and well being. Self-care is a requirement for man and is defined as the practice of activities that individuals initiate and perform on their own behalf in maintaining life, health, and well being (Orem, 1980). It is my belief that through survey results and data analysis of this project, there will be conflict with Orem's model. It will then be my intention to assist women to recognize that it is ultimately up to them to maintain their health and practice self-care and wellness in their lives. Women, ages 50 and above, who attend Curves exercise facility in Grand Forks, North Dakota were invited to participate in this study by completing a brief demographic data sheet, and responding to a short questionnaire about their knowledge and experiences dealing with breast cancer. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize demographic and other quantitative data. Data analysis is currently underway. Findings will be used to determine if there is a need for more education, and if necessary, to present educational materials to the members of Curves exercise facility.
