Primary Health Care Development: Lessons Learned from Global Research Collaborations
Learning Objective #1: Identify key issues in realizing participatory and collaborative international research
Learning Objective #2: Explain strategies that are useful in dissemination of international collaborative research outcomes
In 1986, The UIC College of Nursing launched its WHO Nursing Collaborating Center for the International Development of Primary Health Care. Since that time, the Center has focused on three general areas of emphasis: international degree students and special study scholars; domestic activities that advance primary health care practice and scholarship; and, international projects that demonstrate nursing leadership in addressing complex global health issues. The participants in this symposium represent some of the students, faculty, and special studies scholars who have embraced the ideas of the Center and endeavor to build a knowledge and experiential base for primary health care through international collaborative scholarly endeavors. Specific international research issues that will be addressed include establishing research teams, achieving scientific integrity in the global research community, maximizing research capacity, sustaining research relationships, and disseminating collaborative research findings. The participants will draw upon varied experiences to illustrate some of the lessons learned in the establishment of research partnerships in such countries as China, Korea, Swaziland, Malawi, Kosovo, and Thailand.
