Invited Session: Methods and Issues in Translation Science

Learning Objective #1: Discuss conceptual models to guide design of translation studies
Learning Objective #2: Discuss possible research designs for conducting translation research
Translation research is the scientific investigation of methods and variables that promote and sustain adoption of evidence-based practices (EBPs) by individuals and organizations to improve clinical and operational decision-making in healthcare. This symposium will overview the science of translation research in nursing, along with conceptual models and research designs used in translation science. Methodological issues such as 1) dosage of translating research into practice interventions, 2) study endpoints, and 3) instrumentation will be addresses. Analytic and investigator initiated strategies to address methodological issues will be described. Examples of translation studies in nursing practice will be used to illustrate methods and issues of translation science. Lessons learned from the conduct of translation research will be set forth, and recommendations will be made for future research in testing interventions to promote adoption of evidence-based practices in healthcare. The impact of translation science on public policy will be described, and possible funding sources for translation science will be provided.
