The Journey of Science and Policy
Learning Objective #1: Be proactive in utilizing the process of getting research evidence and findings into policy
Learning Objective #2: understand and assume the role of the researcher in developing relationships with decision makers in order to transfer and translate research findings into policy
There is an increased call for accountability in health care which has resulted in our current emphasis on transparent and evidence-based policy-making. This is further enhanced by our growing awareness that we are living in a knowledge society, and are, in fact, knowledge workers. However, despite the continued production of studies and reports, we continue to have varying degrees of success in influencing how evidence is utilized in different types of decision-making and evaluating the impact the evidence has on intended outcomes. In this presentation, emphasis will be placed on an understanding of how research evidence can influence and impact health policy. In addition, the role of the researcher in engaging and developing relationships with decision makers will be highlighted as research is initiated, pursued and completed. The challenges facing nurse scientists will be identified, and discussion will center on how nurse researchers can ensure that their research findings will critically inform policy-relevant decisions. Concrete examples of the journey of science and policy as experienced by the Office of Nursing Policy, Health Canada, will be presented.
