Learning Objective #1: Understand a lack of knowledge concerning effective counselling adolescents with chronic disease
Learning Objective #2: Understand the importance of knowledge concerning nursing study of effective counselling adolescents with chronic disease

Counselling has an important role in supporting adolescents' self-care and in their willingness to compliance for it at the hospital. However, there is no conclusive knowledge available about the effect of counselling on the compliance among adolescents with chronic disease.

The purpose of this doctoral thesis is to assess the effect of computer-based counselling on the compliance among adolescents with chronic disease. The study consists of three phases.

In the first phase, the purpose was to describe the concept analysis of counselling. The aim was to clarify the definition of the concept of counselling. The strategy suggested by Walker & Avant was employed. In the concept analysis, the uses of the concept were studied, the concept's attributes were determined and related concepts were defined. The antecedents and consequences were also determined. The books of reference and literature of nursing science (n = 38) were used as data. The data were analysed by content analysis.

In the second phase, survey research was carried out to describe the counselling from the point of view of adolescents with chronic disease, their relatives and health professionals. The data were gathered with developed questionnaires from the adolescents (n=75), their relatives (n=40) and health professionals (n=117) in one hospital. The data were analysed by descriptive statistics. The results are being published.

In the third phase, two computer-assisted interventions, a databank and peer group support or a databank and counselling on the net by health professionals will be set up. The compliance will be assessed by applying an experimental-control group design to adolescents with chronic disease (n=40/group) and health professionals (n=10). The data will be collected before and after the intervention by CDCI-instrument used to measure the compliance of adolescents with chronic disease developed by Kyngäs et al. (2000). The data will be analysed using multivariate methods.
