Special Session: Grantwriting Fundamentals - Turning a Research Idea Into a Fundable Proposal Supported by the Research and Scholarship Advisory Council
Learning Objective #1: Develop effective strategies and skills for writing the essential components of a successful research proposal
Learning Objective #2: Understand how reviewers determine strengths and weaknesses of proposals using a systematic review process
All over the globe, nurses are asking clinical questions to improve patient care. Often these questions require the development of a research proposal and funding to support the activities required to discover the answers. Some nurses lack the knowledge and skills for developing a research proposal that merits funding. This presentation will introduce participants to the art and science of how to write a research proposal that is fundable. All aspects of grantsmanship and development of a proposal will be addressed including: defining a problem, crafting specific aims, strategies for writing the conceptual or theoretical framework, significance, literature review and design and methods sections, assuring human subjects protection and basic budget preparation. Writing and style tips for preparing a strong proposal will be shared. Participants will be provided a checklist of questions organized around common criteria used to evaluate research proposals. The questions will serve as a framework within which investigators might critically review their own proposals before peer review. Templates of proposals will be used to compare and contrast the strengths and limitations of research proposals in an interactive mock review session.
