Special Session: The Simultaneous Transformation of Research and Practice Through Decision Support and Documentation Information Technology - A Unique Partnership |
Learning Objective #1: Describe how a partnership of major stakeholders can accelerate the process of knowledge-based nursing practice
|
Learning Objective #2: Describe the value of a bridge between research and practice using information technology |
This session examines a unique collaboration between a college of nursing, an integrated health care organization and an information technology company that promises to change the way research is conducted and nursing care is provided in care settings across the continuum. Researchers, informaticians, clinicians and designers work together to create a process to identify research findings, embed essential information into a clinical decision and documentation support system for instant use and for capturing essential data in a clinical data repository. These data are cleaned and stored in a data warehouse where it can be accessed for quality and research purposes.
The collaboration is an initiative between Aurora Health Care (A), Cerner Corporation (C) and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee College of Nursing (W). The project is known as the ACW Knowledge Based Nursing Initiative (KBNI). Conceptual frameworks are presented for the clinical information system as well as the structure of evidence and the use of standardized terminology. Descriptions are given of the knowledge discovery and the translation processes including the selection of the nursing phenomena, the extensive search of the literature, and the translation process as the knowledge is embedded in a clinical information system. Initial quality outcomes and research projects using the data warehouse are outlined.
Ultimately, the goal is to leverage nursing research to and from the point of use for practicing nurses throughout the organization and ultimately to all health care delivery systems.
