Learning Objective 1: Discuss the art and science of authentic leadership in nursing.
Learning Objective 2: Explore reflective and analytical exercises designed to facilitate an authentic leadership development journey in nursing.
Purpose: This presentation provides an overview of the art, science, and facilitation of authentic leadership development in nursing.
Methods: Using reflective and analytical examples as well as a psychometrically sound Authentic Leadership Questionnaire (ALQ), the presenter will guide participants through exercises that have been designed to facilitate authentic leadership development. Drawing from the personal experience of designing and teaching a graduate level authentic leadership development course in nursing, the author cites “how to” examples that can be applied in multiple settings.
Results: Findings from improved ALQ scores, student grades, and student course evaluations, demonstrate that authentic leadership can be taught and that learning from formal instruction, reflective, and analytical exercises can be transformative.
Conclusions/Implications: Nurses must fully embrace the imperative of a healthy work environment. Embracing this imperative, however, begins with commitment to an introspective journey of self-awareness that then facilitates personal authentic leadership development necessary for creating and sustaining healthy work environments.
