Saturday, April 13, 2013: 3:30 PM-4:45 PM
Description/Overview: This presentation highlights 30 tips learned over 30 years of Shared Governance at a large, Three-time Magnet™ designated, Academic Medical Center. Thirty years ago, this Midwestern Medical Center created a robust and autonomous nursing shared governance structure. This structure has become an integral part of organizational structure and a source of pride for the institution. Over the years, the shared governance model has been the consistent force within Nursing. This presentation will share the lessons over the past 30 years. The tips will be organized into three broad categories: Creating, Maintaining, Evaluating & Invigorating. Creating Shared Governancewill highlight bylaws and structure, institutional culture, autonomy, and accountability. Maintaining Shared Governance will focus on leadership development, creating a legacy, communication patterns, and meeting the needs of the bedside nurse. Evaluating Shared Governance will share the ways we have quantified the impact shared governance has on quality and the patient experience and leadership development of nurses at various stages of their career. Invigorating Shared Governance will share our trials and tribulations during the 30 year journey and how the organization went back to the basics, celebrated, and built a renewed interest in shared governance. The presenters of this lively and engaging presentation have first-hand experience with Shared Governance. The presenters each held an elected office at different periods over the 30 years of Shared Governance. This presentation will demonstrate the impact of building a legacy of shared governance as it relates to nursing, quality, and the patient experience.
