Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore the current status and the factors related to the use of mobility aids among community-dwelling older adults who had experience in using mobility aids. Using systematic random sampling, 120 elderly subjects, over 75, who had used or were still using mobility aids, residing at Kaohsiung County were interviewed with structural questionnaires. Results indicated that there was a significant correlation between types and number of mobility aids used and the score of Barthel Index or the number of underlying chronic diseases. The higher score of the attitude of using mobility aids existed along with lower education, lower score of Barthel Index, higher number of underlying chronic diseases or poorer self-rating health status, Significant predictors of attitude of using mobility aids included score of Barthel Index, number of underlying chronic diseases, monthly income, and satisfaction of using mobility aids, accounted for 48.8%. The higher degree of satisfaction of using mobility aids existed along with those having no partner, being able to do self-care, getting lower score of Barthel index, or more underlying chronic diseases. Significant predictors of satisfaction of using mobility aids included marital status, monthly income, attitude of using mobility aids, accounted for 45.1%. Results of this study could be utilized by clinical staff to assist those needing to use mobility aids so as to improve their health condition, activities, and living qualities.
