Learning Objective #1: identify the factors that affect the health and healthcare of aging Filipino Americans
Learning Objective #2: describe resources that promote positive health outcomes in aging Filipino Americans

As efforts are directed toward improving health and reducing health care disparities among ethnic groups, methodological and theoretical approaches that explain differences need to be developed. Filipino Americans are the second largest Asian group in the United States. Although similar to other Asian Americans, health challenges specific to this subgroup need to be addressed in research and practice.

This cross-sectional study described the health status, health care access and service satisfaction of aging Filipino Americans and the factors (demographic, individual, family and community resources) associated with health status. Survey questionnaires were used to collect data from 192 Filino Americans--107 women and 85 men. Statistical analyses included descriptive, bivariate and multivariate procedures. In general, Filipino Americans perceived themselves to be relatively healthy and satisfied with their health care. Being male, not having Medicare insurance, higher family connectedness and higher resilience were significant predictors of better health.

These data may be useful to guide practice, develop policy and plan research.
