Learning Objective #1: understand the development of APNs in Singapore
Learning Objective #2: Discuss the success factors and barriers to the development of APNs in Singapore

Background: Advanced practice nursing began in Singapore in 2003 with the commencement of the Master of Nursing programme. To date there are about 30 APNs and interns. Understanding the Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) role and its relationship to other roles within nursing and other health professions is important to ensure growth and maturation of the role in Singapore. The aim of this paper is to highlight the success factors and barriers to the development of APNs in Singapore.

Method: A longitudinal survey was conducted on 30 APN interns. Information on characteristics of practice settings, role responsibilities, aspects of practice, satisfaction with role and key indicators to success, and barriers for role development were gathered at the 1, 2 and 3 years upon graduation.

Results: The findings showed that level of preparation was ranked highly by the interns followed by knowledge and support for physicians. In terms of barriers, this study showed that lack of knowledge and physician support were identified as barriers for successful implementation. .

Conclusion: The findings provide important insights into the evolving APN practice in Singapore. This paper will discuss some of the efforts made to improve the successful implementation of APNs in Singapore. Continued study into the role of the APN is needed to enhance role acceptance and development.
