Effects of Palliative Care Program on Nurses' Knowledge and Attitude and Quality of Care

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects in knowledge, attitude of nurses and quality of palliative care in oncology ward. This study is qusi-experimental designed, twenty two nurses are enrolled in a five weeks course of Palliative Care Program in the oncology ward of medical center hospital in Taichung. Another twenty seven nurses are contrast. The questionnaire, assessing oncology nurses' knowledge and attitudes towards ethical dilemmas, was used to assess philosophy and clinical management, and attitudes regarding common ethical issues before and after the Palliative Care Program. The method of stastistic was used the pair T-test to analysis the collection data after the questionnaire.

The findings showed that the Palliative Care Program raised the palliative knowledge(t =-2.494,P<.05) and Quality of care about the oncology nurses(t =2.354,P<.05). The attitudes and ethical issues had no stastistic difference.The Pearson Correlation Test was used to examine the relationship between the class hours in the Palliative Care Program and the knowledge, attitude and quality of palliative care was positive correlation(r =.434,P<.001)

It was suggested to hold a educational program toward the clinical tutors in oncology ward. The results of this study should encourage those providing or planning in educational changing in the palliative training program for nurses in the area of end-of-life.
