Enhancing eEducation through eEvaluation with Evolve Reach Exams
Learning Objective #1: Describe how electronic media (eEducation) can assist faculty in providing learning experiences coupled with evaluation of student critical thinking abilities to achieve learning outcomes.
Learning Objective #2: Relate research findings and identify recommendations to the use of Education and eEvaluation in nursing education.
With electronic media (eEducation) gaining greater recognition as a powerful tool in nursing education, the interest in evaluation of eEducation-based learning outcomes among faculties is gaining momentum. This symposium unites three research studies that offer evidenced based support for the value of incorporating eEducation within undergraduate nursing curricula, the different applications of eEducation learning activities within nursing programs, and the usefulness of computerized testing as a key to NCLEX-RNŽ success and eEducation outcome assessment. Specifically, these studies examined the merit of using online case studies, high-fidelity human patient simulation (HPS), and standardized, computerized nursing curriculum exams within nursing programs as a means of preparation for licensure success. Findings of the first study indicated that the use of Evolve Apply online case studies increased students’ Evolve Reach (formerly HESI) Exit Exam (E2) scores in a baccalaureate nursing program. The second study examined the value of using HPS as an innovative teaching strategy in combination with an e-Evaluation at the end of the simulation activity. Lastly, six previously conducted validity studies with a total sample of 37,216 subjects indicated that the E2 was 96.30% to 98.30% accurate in predicting NCLEX-RNŽ success. The most recent study also assessed the predictive accuracy of the E2 for the first, second, and third administrations of the E2 using different versions of the exam. The design of a seventh study analyzing the predictive validity of the E2 in relation to NCLEX-RNŽ outcomes has also been completed, and an overview of this study will be included in this presentation. In conclusion, the results of these three research studies support the use of e-Education as a dynamic teaching strategy and e-Evaluation using Evolve Reach standardized exams as an effective assessment for learning and NCLEX-RNŽ preparedness in undergraduate nursing education.
