Supporting Nursing's Adoption of eHealth for Quality Patient Care and Outcomes in an Information Based Culture
Learning Objective #1: To gain an appreciation of successful strategies to enhance the contribution of nurses to eHealth for quality patient care.
Learning Objective #2: To discuss how a Champions program and a foundational web based nursing education resource can be positive factors in facilitating eHealth awareness and adoption
The use of eHealth solutions in health care today is critical to achievement of safe, quality health care, now and into the future. Nurses in all sectors of health care are engaged in improving patient care, access and safety, and in enhancing clinical decision-making, accountability and efficiency. Their involvement in shaping and enacting the eHealth agenda will influence the effectiveness of eHealth as a solution to the current and future challenges facing the health care sector. As nurses are increasingly required to adopt eHealth in their practice, it is imperative that they have an understanding of the relationship between ehealth, nursing, quality care and broad health care system issues. The Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO), with funding from the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, Ontario, Canada, is in the third year of a project established to provide nurses with the knowledge, skills and confidence to contribute to eHealth policy making and become ehealth adopters in their practice. The project has resulted in identification of a framework, and a profile of views and competencies of nurses related to ehealth, nursing and health care, from which key strategies were developed to meet the project goals. This Symposium through three related papers will highlight the background of the project, as well as details about the technology supported ehealth Champion Program and the interactive web based educational resource related to nursing and ehealth. The symposium will demonstrate the impact of a planned strategic approach to support nursings’ involvement in ehealth.
