Equipping Minority Nurse Educators with Online Pedagogical Skills: A Preliminary Report on Predictors of Success and Lessons Learned
Learning Objective #1: Describe an innovative strategy to share diverse minority nurse educators nationally and globally.
Learning Objective #2: Identify predictors of success and implications for future research.
Nationally, minority nursing student representation is 24%. While schools of nursing across the nation have worked to increase minority student representation, there remains a severe shortage of minority nurse educators. With only 10% of nursing faculty from ethnic and racial minorities, there are few role models for the increasingly diverse student population in nursing. Online education is one tool that can be used to educate and share minority nurse educators in schools of nursing across the nation and around the globe. With the minority nurse educator grant supported by the Human Resource Service Administration (HRSA), an online education program was developed and implemented. Minority nurse educators were recruited through national advertisements, and a selection process was instituted. A 32 week Certificate in Distance Learning Program was provided to an ethnically and geographically diverse group of minority nurse educators. Online pedagogy and skills were taught in a seminar fashion, and the learning group size was held to less than fifteen students. In this model, the nurse educators could receive individualized attention. Based on previous experience of educating over fifty nurse educators, the program was designed to provide best practices in online education, but also allow for the individual teaching styles and personalities of the minority nurse educators. Results were variable in the first year, and challenges were somewhat different than previous experiences with nurse educators. Interventions were instituted, and the success rate of completion improved in the second and third year of the grant. The experiences learned from this online education program have implications for future research, both nationally and globally.
