SPECIAL SESSION: How to Start Publishing Your Work in Journals
Learning Objective #1: The learner will be able to understand clearly the process involved in the publication of research.
Learning Objective #2: The learner will be able to structure a paper and know how to submit an article for publication in an appropriate journal.
This session is aimed at ‘beginners’ – i.e. those who have not yet had a paper published, or perhaps just one or two. The aim is to encourage new authors by demystifying the publishing process and giving helpful and practical advice. The session will concentrate on publishing articles in national and international journals (although other forms of publishing will be mentioned), and it will concentrate on some of the key choices and decisions that need to be made when first thinking about writing a paper for publication, including:- • Deciding which journal to publish in • How to structure papers of different types • The steps in writing a paper • The publication process (i.e. from submission of a manuscript through to publication) And some of the frequently-asked questions that inexperienced writers commonly ask will be addressed, including:- • What will ensure that my paper will get accepted? • Should I contact the journal and ask them if the paper I have in mind is of interest? • Can I submit a coursework paper that I wrote as part of my studies? • What are the main reasons why a paper might get rejected? The session will include a powerpoint presentation, but time will be allowed for participants to contribute and to ask questions.
