Learning Objective 1: The learner will able to understand increasing the successful rate program with ventilator-dependent patients in respiratory care unit.

Learning Objective 2: The learner will able to understand the factors of weaning successful rate of ventilator-dependent patients in respiratory care unit.

Background: The weaning successful rate could increase the quality life in long term ventilator-dependent patients. In addition, the bed turnover rate and medical care cost could decrease.

Objective: The purpose of the project was to increasing weaning successful rate of long-term ventilator-dependent patients in respiratory care unit.

Methods: This quasi-experimental method with the one sample pretest and posttest design was used the project.Researchers developed increasing the successful rate program that included weaning related-service education, respiratory muscle exercise training, weaning education, and weaning assessment checklist.

Setting: This project was conducted at a teaching hospital from October 2006 to February 2007 in the north of Taiwan.

Sample: Long-term ventilator-dependent patients and nurses were recruited.

Results: Following increasing the successful rate program application, the results showed that: 1) the rate of weaning cognitive for nurses improved from 64.5% to 100%. 2) the performance correct rate of respiratory muscle exercise to weaning patients increased from 44% to 92%. 3) weaning successful rate with long-term ventilator-dependent patients increased from 36.5% to 65.0%.

Conclusions: Results lead researchers to conclude that implementing this increasing the weaning successful rate program could effectively enhance weaning successful rate of long-term ventilator-dependent patients in respiratory care unit. The results also should be provided to nurses as a reference when care long-term ventilator-dependent patients.
