Learning Objective 1: The learner will be able to better able to discuss and implement the concept of health promotion among patients with diabetes mellitus.

Learning Objective 2: The learner will know more information regarding future areas of research of the concept of health promotion among patients with diabetes mellitus.

Purpose:

The purpose of this presentation is to clarify the concept of health promotion among patients with diabetes mellitus. An additional purpose of this concept analysis is to educate nursing professionals regarding health promotion among patients with diabetes mellitus.

Methods:

The method used for this concept analysis was originally created and published by Walker and Avant. A review of relevant literature was combined with the Walker and Avant procedure for concept analysis.

Results:

The attributes of the concept of health promotion among patients with diabetes mellitus are: a) an ongoing individualized process of which the individual is the recipient, b) health education of individuals with diabetes mellitus centered on their individual needs and values, c) prevention of complications of diabetes mellitus including but not limited to blindness, amputation, and cardiovascular disease, and d) adoption of lifestyle or behavioral changes aimed at optimal health status for individuals with diabetes.

Conclusion:

Health promotion among patients with diabetes mellitus has many implications for nursing practice, research, and education. Health promotion among patients with diabetes mellitus is an integral part in the nursing role because of the emphasis of disease prevention and general health promotion in nursing training. Nurses are especially well suited to initiate the process of health promotion. Nurses are uniquely qualified to raise awareness of positive health behaviors, diabetes mellitus as a disease process, and teach self care measures to individuals. By educating the patient with diabetes mellitus regarding increasing physical activity, smoking cessation and improving nutrition, the nurse aids the patients in avoiding further complications of their disease through prevention. Through the process of patient education, nurses can aid patients with diabetes to prevent further disease complications, and aid patients in increasing their knowledge regarding positive behavioral changes that will enable them to achieve optimal health.
