Health Assessment, Health Status and Health Care Needs of Young Children in Child Day Care Centers

Learning Objective 1: know that health problems are substantially high for young children, and introduction of center based child health service system is urgently needed.

Learning Objective 2: establish the direction for developing health care service system for young children.

Purpose:  This study aimed to investigate child's health status with systematic health assessment, and health care needs for a Center-based Child Care Health Program in child day care centers. Methods: Data were collected from 244 young children and their parents from 6 day care centers in Seoul. Parents completed a structured questionnaire and research assistants conducted developmental assessment and physical exam for a month, Feb 2007. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS Win, and analyzed through descriptive statistics. Results: 3.3% of subjects were less than 3th growth percentile of height, 8.6% were underweight, 6.2% were hypertensive, 7.8% were obese. The result of Korean Denver II developmental screening test showed 8.6% of subjects were classified as questionable or untestable. About 30% of the children had acute or chronic illness.  parents perceived the need of professional health care service for the child at day care centers(48.4%). Conclusion: Results of this study suggests that health problems are substantially high for young children, and introduction of center based child health service system is urgently needed. What's discovered in this study can be used for establishing the direction for developing health care service system for young children.
