Exploring the Relationship Between Stress Coping Strategies and Personal Professional Characteristics among Nurses in Intensive Care Units of the Regional Government Hospital in Northern Taiwan

Learning Objective 2: The learner will be able to put efforts on improving the ICU environment, which in turn decreases in work-related stress among nurse.

Purpose: The purposes of this study is to exploring the relationship between stress coping strategies and personal professional characteristics among nurses in Intensive Care Units of the regional government hospital in Northern Taiwan.

Methods: A descriptive correlation designed study was conducted to explore the coping strategies of nurse in Intensive Care Unit. Sample of the study contains 71 ICU nurses who were drawn from three units and were requested to complete a standardized questionnaire as Coping Strategy Scale (CSS).The respondents completed the questionnaires while on work duty. The SPSS package was used to analyse the data.

Results:

 Result shows that most frequent coping strategies were seeking advice, examining self and exhausting all possible avenues, indeed positive emotion-focused coping was highlighted among five types, followed by problem-orientation, ability enhancement, change of perspective and negative emotion-focused coping. Therefore nursing education background related to positive emotion-focused coping (sig=.007), ICU training program to be highly significant (sig=.019) for ability enhancement and less significant (sig=.060) for problem orientation. The results provide some evidences and supports to that suggest personal professional characteristics have a different significance to coping strategies. Also, there is a significant relationship between personal professional characteristics and five coping strategies.

Conclusion: Finally, recommendations are made regarding nursing administrators and managers could put efforts on improving the ICU environment, which in turn decreases in work-related stress among nurse, hence, quality of care thus gets improved afterwards.
