The evidence-based project addressed the problem of the current and future nursing shortage. Texas Woman's University (TWU) reinvented nursing education through partnering with Baylor University Medical Center (BUMC) to offer baccalaureate nursing education via a weekend/online grant funded program to individuals who already have a non-nursing baccalaureate degree. The partnership offers a six semester (including summers) upper division nursing program. The methods for carrying out the project included admitting 25 qualified students who began the program summer 2008. During the preparation phase, the project directors advertised and met with members of BUMC, prepared online courses, and hired a graduate assistant. Master's prepared nurses were recruited (two) and oriented from BUMC. Implementation began the summer of 2008. Currently, for fall 2009, 19 students remain in the program and will graduate May 2010. The next phase of the project, extension, will begin spring 2010 with 45 new students. The grant was completed August 2009 and the program is now funded by TWU.
The 19 students have successfully passed all courses so far. Two of the original 25 students dropped the program for personal reasons; four have transferred to the traditional nursing part-time program. The 19 students will graduate spring 2010. Their NCLEX scores will be compared to the traditional students. The students were surveyed August 2009 for program evaluation. The program was rated positively by all participants (mean satisfaction scores of 90% or higher). The students indicated satisfaction (agree or strongly agree) with the program.
