Learning Objective 1: understand the effect of multidisciplinary care among patients with chronic kidney disease.

Learning Objective 2: understand the content of multidisciplinary care to be implemented in practice.

Purpose: Multidisciplinary care in chronic kidney disease has been reviewed in various studies, but its effectiveness still has inconsistent results. The study purpose was to determine the effect of multidisciplinary care on renal function, all cause mortality and hospitalization among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Methods: This was an integrated review study with meta-analysis technique. We searched literature from 1993 through 2009 because multidisciplinary care was advocated by the NIH consensus group in 1993 for care of chronic kidney disease. Searched databanks included Medline, Cumulative index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), PubMed, The Cochrane Library, and Chinese Electronic Periodical Services (CEPS). Search keywords were multidisciplinary, pre-dialysis care, pre-dialysis education, chronic kidney disease, chronic renal insufficiency, and chronic renal failure. All reference lists, including studies and related articles, were checked. Articles were retrieved with multidisciplinary care interventions and subjects diagnosed as chronic kidney disease before renal replacement therapy. The effect size would be calculated by comprehensive meta-analysis program.

Results: The data analysis is in progress. Quality of each study will be reviewed. The content of multidisciplinary care will also be investigated. The effect size will be calculated to evaluate the effect of the intervention of multidisciplinary care on renal function, all cause mortality and hospitalization.

Conclusion: The effect of multidisciplinary care on patient with chronic kidney disease may maintain patients’ renal function, decrease mortality rate and events of hospitalization. Early implementation of comprehensive education programs may be needed for patients with CKD.
