Learning Objective 1: understand the important factors associated with the excellence in nursing practice.

Learning Objective 2: discuss the important factors of professional development of nurses.

Purpose: To explore the important factors associated with the excellence in nursing practice by focusing on nurses with more than 10 years of clinical experiences in Japan

Methods: The Self-Evaluation Scale of Excellence in Nursing Practice for Hospital Nurses(ENP) was used to measure the excellence in nursing practice of nurses(Funashima,2009). The 35 items with a 5-point Likert scale show excellent nursing practice in hospitals as identified by a qualitative study(Ueda et al,2003), and the participants rate their degree of achievement. The reliability and validity of the ENP are well-established. The Nurses’ Attributes Questionnaire(NAQ) was used to collect the data of 26 attributes of nurses. The content validity of it was established by a pilot study and a panel of experts. A mail survey was conducted, and the data were analyzed statistically.

Results: Four-hundred and sixty eight nurses with more than 10 years of clinical experiences in Japan participated. The mean age of them was 43.2(SD=17.8) years old, and the mean years of their clinical experience was 19.6(SD=7.3). The participants were classified into 3 categories according to the ENP scores; high score group(HSG, less than 103), middle score group(MSG,between 104 and 140), and low score group(LSG, more than 141). As the result, 46(10.2%) nurses were in the HSG, 331(71.4%) nurses were in the MSG, and 9(19.4%) nurses were in the LSG. Furthermore, the results of univariate analysis showed that 10 attributes of nurses associated with the excellence in nursing practice significantly(p<.005). The results of multiple regression analysis showed that “performing with one’s professional value and belief”(R=.638, standardized beta=.250,p<.001) was the most important attribute, which influenced on the excellence in nursing practice, in the 10 attributes.

Conclusion: The result suggested it is important for nurses to have the value and belief as a nursing profession for improving the quality of nursing practice.
