Effects of Conversation Skill Training on Improving Conversation Skill of Chronic Schizophrenia

Learning Objective 1: know that the Conversation Skill Training(CST) is beneficial to improve the conversation skill in chronic schizophrenia patients.

Learning Objective 2: know that the Conversation Skill Training(CST) could be applied nursing care for chronic schizophrenic rehabilitation.

Backgrounds: Suffered from disease or after attacked, schizophrenia always remains symptoms such as apathetic emotion, less activities, and poor interpersonal interactions. For these symptoms Conversation Skill Training (CST) can be applied patients to express one, contact with others, and mitigate tension of interpersonal relationship.

Purpose: The purpose of this study aimed to evaluate the effects of the CST on the improvement of conversation skill during chronic schizophrenic rehabilitation.

Methods: A quasi-experimental design was used. 74 patients were recruited from chronic wards in a psychiatric hospital, and were assigned into either experiment or control. The experimental group received CST 60 minutes per time and twice a week for four weeks, whereas the control group received routine treatments. Data collection was arranged within one week before and after the training. Questionnaires included Fundamental Scale, Interaction Anxiousness Scale, Interpersonal Communication Satisfaction Inventory. The Chi-square and ANCOVA were used to analyze data.

Results: The significant improvement on the conversation skill was found in the experimental group after CST. And the conversation skill of the experimental group is better than the control.

Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that the CST is beneficial to improve the conversation skill in chronic schizophrenia patients. The CST could be applied nursing care for chronic schizophrenic rehabilitation.
