Positive practice environment can attract and remain nurses, and also provide quality of nursing care. The purpose of this study was to investigate the perception of practice environment from different nursing units from nurses at a medical center in Southern Taiwan.
The study was a cross-sectional design. A total of 563 registered nurses at 27 nursing units completed the questionnaire. The Nursing Work Index-Revised (NWI-R) developed by Slater et al. was adapted to evaluated nurses’ practice environment.
Significant differences were found among different nursing units on the score of nursing management, adequate staff and resources, and doctor-nurse relationship. The surgical nursing staff had the highest scores on three sub-scales. On the nursing management, there was a significant difference between surgical and ICU nursing staff. On the adequate staff and resources, medical nursing staff scored lowest when comparing with other units. The doctor-nurse relationship was poor at medical than surgical units from nurses’ perception.
The perception from nurses was different among nursing units on nursing management, adequate staff and resources, and doctor-nurse relationship. Leadership and workload may consider as factors affecting the nurses’ perception on practice environment.
