Learning Objective 1: Identification of areas of practice where new decision support technologies are being introduced or planned
Learning Objective 2: Explore how new technologies are used to enhance nurse decision making in education and practice
Intent: Despite the use of technology in their daily lives, many students and nurses do not have the decision making nor informatics skills needed to practice competently within the nursing profession. This discrepancy has propelled us to find a way to diminish this gap. We will partner with our collaborating agencies about informatics competencies and decision making skills needed for our graduates and their nurses. Integration of decision support technologies, into our curriculum, will provide the means by which they will gain informatics and decision making skills needed to practice effectively and safely in the information rich environment in which they will practice.
Description: The introduction of technology is central to the development of nurses' roles and includes technologies, to assist decision making. Nurses need knowledge and skills for practice in a complex, technologically sophisticated, consumer-centric, global environment. By providing them with the required informatics and decision making proficiencies, we will ensure that current and future nurses are well equipped to provide safe and effective care. It is imperative that their education prepares them not only to use the technologies currently in place, but also to adapt, as systems and technology evolve. The ultimate goal is the creation of nurses as knowledge workers of the future.
Outcomes: Determine the best approach for curricular integration, 2.Conduct a needs analysis of educator and student competencies using standards developed by the National League for Nursing, American Association of Colleges of Nursing and Quality and Safety Education for Nursing and 3. Assess the impact of these new technologies on decision making.
