B 09 Contemporary Issues and Innovative Solutions in Evidence-Based Practice

Tuesday, 13 July 2010: 8:30 AM-9:45 AM
Description/Overview: Evidence-based practices have been addressed in the literature since the early to mid-1990s yet successful implementation, embedding, and sustaining best practice and use of best evidence in decision-making remains inconsistent. Even with calls across the international healthcare landscape to accelerate the design and translation of evidence-based interventions into clinical practice, evidence-based practice in the real world is hampered by many issues. Although the importance of evidence-based practice is well documented, the uncertainty surrounding how to achieve the goal of translating best known evidence to clinical practice where it is implemented, embedded, standardized when appropriate, and sustained remains unclear. This symposium will introduce three contemporary issues and corresponding innovative solutions related to the reality of evidence-based decision-making in clinical practice. Nurses engaged in evidence-based decision-making initiatives at a large multi-state/multi-site medical center in the U.S. will share key contemporary issues and corresponding innovative solutions from their current work in this field. This symposium provides take-home strategies based on the research study findings and quality improvement project lessons learned in their current work with evidence-based decision-making. Dialogue with conference participants will be built into this interactive symposium.
