To explore the experience of a yoga intervention on breast cancer patients with chemotherapy

Purpose: Yoga has been widely used as part of breast cancer treatment to relieve the patients of physical and mental stress. However, studies that have been done generally focused on the physical and mental effects of Yoga, as few studies on the participating patients’ experiences and feelings have been done previously. The purpose of this study was to explore thoroughly the experiences of breast cancer patients who participated in Yoga exercises.

Methods: This study used focus groups approach. A purposive sampling of 11 participants with chemotherapy and participated in Yoga exercises for eight weeks was recruited from cancer centre. Participants were divided into two groups comprising of 5-6 persons in per group. By means of a semi-structured interview, all responses were transcribed into text files and analyzed through content analysis.

Results: The summarized results based of the analyses show that the experiences and feelings of the patients participating in Yoga exercises can be divided into four themes were as follows: transforming from feeling uneasy to feeling confident, regaining a sense of belonging, sharing and obtaining experiences and feedback, and live to be self.

Conclusion: The positive experiences of Yoga exercises reported by patients with breast cancer for further studies examining the possibilities and requirements for implementation of Yoga programs in clinical practice and nursing education.
