Learning Objective 1: The learner will be able to learn the effectiveness of a rehabilitation nursing education program for nursing staffs in orthopedic ward.

Learning Objective 2: The learner will be able to learn the quality of orthopedic nursing care.

Purpose:

The purpose of the study is to compare the effectiveness of a rehabilitation nursing education program for nursing staffs in orthopedic ward.

Methods:

This study adopts a one group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design. The subjects were recruited from one regional teaching hospital and one medical center; Total sample size was 40. The education program was 9 topics in 10 hours. The content of program included orthopedic assessment, nurse role in rehabilitation care, pain management, patient education, rehabilitation exercise after joint replacement and fracture surgery, etc. The research measurement included knowledge about rehabilitation nursing, satisfaction scale, and demographic data. The knowledge test and satisfaction about course were performed at pretest, immediately and 6 weeks after education program.

Results:

The results are as follows: The average age of 40 nurses is 26.60±. 3.53. They are all female. Only 6 (15.0%) nurses are marriage. 28 (70.0%) are bachelor degree. 18(45.0%) have religious. The average working years are 3.47±3.23, 14(35%) are 2 years. Twelve nurses are in N clinical ladder (30.0%), and 11 nurses are in N1 (27.5%). Knowledge score about rehabilitation nursing is 18.05±2.24 at pretest, 18.95±2.30 after educational program immediately, and 19.52±2.21 at 6 weeks after course. There are significant differences between pretest and immediately after course (t=-2.421, p=.020) and 6 weeks after course (t=-3.745, p=.001), but there is no significant difference between immediately and 6 weeks after course (t=-1.7.3, p=.096). The average score of satisfaction about education program is 48.90±4.01, the standard satisfaction score is 88.91% (48.90/55).

Conclusion:

According the findings, we suggest that more outcome indicators, such as nursing care behavior and patient outcome, are used to evaluate the effects of educational program in future study.
