Learning Objective 1: The learner will be able to (1) understand the relationship among nursing work environment, nurse satisfaction and nurse workload.

Learning Objective 2: The learner will be able to (2) understand the predictors of nursing work environment.

Purpose:

Nursing work environment affects nurse and patient outcomes. There are relationships among nursing work environment, nurse workload and nurse satisfaction. There is a lack of information about the causes responsible for it of nurses in Taiwan. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships among nurse work environment, nurse workload and nurse satisfaction among nurses in Taiwan.

Methods:

This was a cross-sectional study. Secondary data analysis was from a nationwide database of utilization of resources, staffing and environment on outcomes study. A total of 117 nursing units with 1896 nurses were included in the database and the response rate was 97%. Demographic characteristics and two nurse perception inventories were used for the analysis of nursing. The 2 inventories used were the McCloskey / Mueller Satisfaction Scale for job satisfaction and Nursing Work Environment Index Chinese Version for Nursing Work Environment. Nurse workload was measured by work intensity, turnover rate of patients, ratio of RNs to average patient census and patient dependency. Pearson correlation and regression were used for analysis.

Results:

There were significant correlation among nursing work environment, nurse satisfaction (r = .616) and patient dependency of nurse workload (r = .266). Two variables, nurse satisfaction and patient dependency were used to predict the nursing work environment. The total variance of nursing work environment was 41%.

Conclusion:

Job satisfaction and nurse workload could be used to predict nursing work environment.
