Comparison of Self-Efficacy and Life Adjustments Between Health and Depression in Adolescent

Learning Objective 2: The learner will be able to know the depression and self-efficacy, life adjustments relationships.

Background: Adolescence depression is an important developmental problem for future health development and preventing an increased risk of substance abuse and suicidal behavior.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships between depression,  self-efficacy, parent-child relationship, and school life adjustments (academic, interpersonal relationship) among  adolescents.

Methods:

 A random sample from ten-grade students (N=765) was recruited from Five high school in Taipei-city. After questionnaire screening was conducted, the students meeting the definition of high risk group of depression suicide or health were according the result of test in Beck Depression Inventory II. Depression of self- efficacy scale measures for adolescents self- efficacy and school life adjustments scale measures for adolescents academic adaptation and interpersonal relationship. Descriptive statistics were calculated for adolescent depression, life adjustments, as well as demographic variables. Regression Analysis for self- efficacy of depression and school life adjustments correlation,statistical significance was set at α < 0.05.

Results:

    The prevelence rate of depression among adolescent is 14%. There is no significant difference of self-efficacy of depression, parent-child relationship and school life adjustments between adolescent with and without depression. The more self-efficacy of depression among adolescents, the more postive school life adjustment. If the parent-child relationship is rigrous father pattern, the school life adjustment tends to more negative.

Conclusion:

    Based on the results, it will provide the more holistic nursing care in adolescences’depression and prevent primary mental health in school. School nurses and parents have to understand the adolescents' mental health condiiton, especially their self-efficacy of depression  could influence their depression and school life adjustment. Futher program to enhance adolescents' self-efficacy of depression is necessary.
