Evaluation of the Knowledge, Critical Thinking and Team Work Collaboration of the EBN Training Program in Taiwan

Learning Objective 1: To implement an effective EBN training program

Learning Objective 2: To integrate the lecture, group discussion, and active learning activity into the EBN training program

Purpose: Develop an evidence-based nursing (EBN) training program to preparing the competency for nurses in Taiwan. An integrate teaching program was developed based on the five EBN process by a interdisciplinary team, including physician and nurses.

Methods: Forty-four nurses were recruited by the recommendations from the directors of department of nursing in Taiwan. Two-day workshop was implemented by an active participation agenda. Five groups were classified to work together and discuss the learning shit, including to writing the PICO, to search literature on web, to appraisal the articles, to making clinical decision based on the evidence, expectation, and expertise.

Results: All of the nurses participated in this EBN training program satisfied the education material and lecture courses, the discussion initiated by tutors, the active learning process to answer all of the questions on the learning sheet, and to present the clinical decision by team work collaboration. The EBN knowledge and attitude have significantly improved compared to the pre-test. The self-reported critical thinking and team work collaboration also significantly increasing.

Conclusion: An integrate EBN training program included lecture, group discussion, and active learning activity could improve the EBN competency of nurses, and improve the EBN practice in clinical.
