Description/Overview: When a care provider is clear about the standards of their practice, the multi-dimensions of their professional role (sentry, guide, healer, teacher, collaborator, and leader), it is thought that they perform to a higher level of capacity. When a nurse understands the responsibility they have accepted and exercises appropriate authority, and reflect upon decisions made and actions taken to learn, they are modeling professional practice.
Role clarity will be examined using three different studies from the USA. The first study examined how role clarity of the nurse’s manager supported outcomes of professional practice and clarity of system. The second study examines the synergy between a Rapid Response RN and bedside RN within an emergency situation. Qualitative data will reveal how role clarity assisted with rescue of the patient from a deleterious outcome. The final study will examine how clarity of role enhanced professional practice in a tertiary care center in New York City.
Learner Objective #1: Identify how Role Clarity improved outcomes of Rapid Response Teams.
Learner Objective #2: Describe the relationship Role Clarity has with Professional Practice.
