Learning Objective 1: The objective of this study was to evaluate the correlations between lifestyle backgrounds and lifestyle functions of day-care attendees.

Learning Objective 2: The learner will be able to learn about a support of a Japanese day care.@

Purpose:

Psychiatric day care in Japan provides lifestyle-specific support to patients through programs for maintaining and improving the lifestyle functions of attendees. The objective of this study was to evaluate the correlations between lifestyle backgrounds and lifestyle functions of day-care attendees.

Methods:

The study enrolled 1,272 patients with schizophrenia registered at 30 different psychiatric day-care institutions. A questionnaire survey was conducted by post. Permission for the study was granted by the ethics committee of the concerned facility. We used the Japanese version of the Rathus Assertiveness Schedule (J-RAS), a functional assessment scale for lifestyle backgrounds and lifestyle functions in mental disabilities. The study was conducted between September and November of 2007, and data was statistically analyzed using multiple regression analysis.

Results:

Four hundred seventy-four individuals (37.3%) who submitted completed survey questionnaires and consented to our research were finally included  (mean age, 46.1 ± 12.4 years). The attendance period was 54.1 ± 47.9 months. The attendees’ lifestyle function score was 90.0 ± 18.3 points and their assertiveness score was -7.8 ± 20.8 points.

Parameters in lifestyle background for which a significant correlation was observed with the lifestyle function score were as follows: “attending day care to build the will to live(p < 0.05),” “attending day care to get along well with other people(p < 0.05),” “attending day care to gain control over symptoms(p < 0.05),” “attending day care to set goals(p < 0.05),” “attending day care to meet trustworthy people(p < 0.05),” “attending day care to enjoy a particular lifestyle(p < 0.05),” “attending day care to live a particular way(p < 0.05),” “days attended in one month(p < 0.05),” and “assertiveness score(p < 0.05).”

Conclusion:

Lifestyle background parameters showing correlations with lifestyle functions were objectives for attending day care, limited days of attendance, and high communication skills.
