Psychiatric Care Nurses' and Caregivers' Perceptions of Quality of Care in Community

Purpose:

Both the nurses and caregivers play an important role in the care providing process for psychiatric patients. Their unique experience of patient care make it important to include them when defining quality of care. The aim of the study was to describe how the psychiatric nurses and caregivers perceived quality of care in the case of psychiatric care in community.

Methods:

This study adopts an action research approach to understand and represent issues of temporality quality of care in the case of psychiatric care in community. Multiple techniques including in-depth individual interviews, focus groups, and participant observation are applied for data collection. Content analysis was used for the analysis.

Results:

Thirteen nurses and sixteen caregivers were interviewed by the current resaercher. Four themes of care quality were emerged from nurses or caregivers: 1) to improve the nurses competence, 2)to proved seamless care to patients , 3) to search the meanings of life for patients, and 4)to link the current health care network with patients needs. Quality of care was perceived as a positive concept.

Conclusion:

The findings of this study emphasize the importance of the continuing care. It is important to include the perception of care quality from both nurses and caregivers into the curriculum of on-job training for psychiatric nurses. The results could be used as a reference for guiding health care services for the psychiatric patients in the community.
