Background:

Nursing staff is the major care manpower in the medical service system in Taiwan. They often work overtime, which leads to physical and mental fatigue and further diminish their work satisfaction and willingness of remaining their post. Thus care quality rendered to patients is seriously influenced.

Purpose:

Study on the efficacy of improvement on medical ward nursing staff’s working overtime

Methods:

This study adopts PDCA to figure out the factors influencing nursing staff’s working overtime, by simplifying various work processes, eliminate ineffective work time, adding instruments and equipment, configuring manpower elastically, enhancing integration and division of job for the team to promote work efficiency of the nursing staff.

Results:

 The rate of working overtime of medical nursing staff decreases from 78.2% to 11.3%.

 Conclusion:

Improvement of nursing staff working overtime not only relieves their work load and maintains them on the current position but also promotes nursing quality and patient safety.
