Learning Objective 1: The learner will be able to examine the affected areas of self at children with cancer

Learning Objective 2: The learner will be able to examine use of the case studies which is one of the qualitative rsearch method in the field of nursing.

Purpose:

The purpose of the study is to put forth the self exposure of a school age child by using play.

Methods:

The study was held in the oncohology service of a public hospital between the dates July and September, 2011. Eight sessions in total were made with the child who took treatment in that clinic together with the parents. As searching pattern , interpretive case study method has been used. Play sessions were held in the basis of Roger’s theory of self and child centered play therapy. Child centered play model was generated by eight game sessions in which only the researcher and the child took place. The researcher expressed her own experiences during the process of generating the model.

Results:

The assessment of data was realized in two stages:  examining the data and content analysis. In the new formed play model 9 themes have been found out: a) expressing the good memories b) control c) problem solving d) relations e) aggressive behaviors  f) regration g) good-bad h) trauma i) anxiety.

Conclusion:

Childhood cancers are fatal diseases which cause intense stress and traumatic situations for  the ones who experience that disease. That kind of an emotionally hard life may reason some hardships for developing self concept. Therefore; the self concept of the school age child needs to be supported. The themes which are obtained at the end of this case study are thought to be supportive for prospective nursing models on the side of exposure of child’s self.
