The Meaning of Oversea Learning Experience: Taiwanese Nursing Students in the U.S.A.

Learning Objective 1: The learner will be able to disclose the understanding of the experience and meaning about the oversea learning experience for nursing students.

Learning Objective 2: The learner will be able to get the information to make a oversea studying plan for nursing school student in future.

Background: Globalization is the trend for nursing education, nursing practice, and nursing research. In Taiwan, it is an important issue for nursing education to be internationalized. 

Purpose: The main purpose of this study was to explore the experience of oversea learning for Taiwanese nursing students.

Methods: A qualitative research design was adopted, using semi-structured interviews with nursing 10 college students who had oversea learning experiences. Nine female and 1 male students participated in the study. Data was analyzed by thematic data analysis.

 Results: After data analysis, there were two themes and six categories emerged. They were: A. Learning Achievement (a)growth of nursing professional experience (b); increasing language proficiency; (c)engaging into multi-cultural background; (d) self-identity reconstruction, B. Learning Predicament, (a) unpredictable anxiety (b)language deficiency (c)culture shock. 

Conclusion: The results of this study disclosed our understanding of the experience and meaning about the oversea learning experience from nursing students. It also provided the information for nursing school teacher in future oversea studying plan.(This study was supported by grants HK-MNRC-100-8)
