Learning Objective 1: Development of teaching methods

Learning Objective 2: Effective verification of teaching methods

Purpose:

【Purpose】Consider the effect of IBL (Inquiry-based Learning) conducted with the anticipation of acquiring self-learning ability by a nursing student version factor analysis of Japanese version SDLRS(Self Directed Learning Readiness scale).

Methods:

We conducted an IBL learning method on the sophomores in two universities of A and B from October 2009 to February 2011. We surveyed them with Japanese version SDLRS before and after conducting the IBL learning.

We analyzed 165 students in total who answered both before and after conducting it and showed no missing value.

The Japanese version SDLRS which is an evaluation scale consists of 58 items and used the following eight factors in factor analysis by the department of nursing science. Topics factor, we were confirmed by corresponding t-test.

Results:

Average Scores increased on all three cases after implementing IBL method. In detailed comparison, average score of all subject factors rose in two cases.

In University A, six subject factors ①, ②, ③, ④, ⑥, ⑧ showed significant increases of 1%, and in University B, six subject factors ①, ②, ③, ④, ⑤, ⑦, ⑧ showed  significant increases of 1%. As for the last case, subject factors ①, ②, ④, ⑤, ⑧ showed significant increases, but decreases were seen in factors ③, ⑥, ⑦.

In addition, There were correlation between subject factor ① and factor ②,③, ④, and ⑧. Significant increases were seen on people with higher scores on Question 34 (I'd like to try new things even if its prospect is unknown) and 24 (I always envy people who are learning something new), which are the component factors of subject factor ①.

Conclusion:

It was revealed that undetermined existences transformed into learning motivation. It was indicated that IBL learning became a learning method to get a pleasure of learning new things.
