Determining the Needs of the Family Caregivers at a Research Hospital

Learning Objective 1: The learner will be able to learn the needs of the family caregiver in Turkey.

Learning Objective 2: Being a family caregiver has the most difficult times. The nurses will be able to learn to be careful to give a nursing care.

Purpose: Being ill and hospitalized affect the family caregivers environmental and social lives as well as the patients. These effects were emphasized due to the fact the difficulties experienced in the hospital, their physical, psychological, social needs and expectations from the health care professions. This descriptive study was  aimed to evaluate the  physical, familial, and social needs of the family caregivers in the process of the hospitilization

Methods:  Data was obtained using face to face interviews from the structured questionnaire developed by the researchers.

Results: Participants were between the ages of 31-50, and graduated from the university. The participants presented in surgical clinics had more needs esp. the social needs more than the others, and 36.4% of the patients ages were generally 60 years of age. In this study, although 72.9% of the participants stated many psychological needs. The most frequently expressions of the participants were "I miss my children”, “I’m afraid of loosing my patients", "I miss my past." (respectively 60%, 56.5%, 52.9%)

Conclusion: Nurses should be aware of the needs of the family caregivers as well as the health-care needs of the patient, provide professional nursing care by including the family caregivers.
