Learning Objective 1: The learner will be able to understand the importance of work value of the new nursing graduates.

Learning Objective 2: The learner will be able to know what the important factors are to predict the employment intention of the new nursing graduates.

Purpose:  The lack of nursing manpower has been a global problem, and Taiwan is not excepted. In fact, it is enough to staff with nurses every year, but not engaged in the nursing work after graduating and training is one of the important factors causing nursing workforce to be in short. Many studies discussing the key factor of influencing employment intention found that the '' work value '' occupies quite important position. The purpose of the study is that by confirming the work value of the new nursing graduates, to understand and predict their clinical employment intension.

Methods:  A cross-sectional survey was conducted by using constructive questionnaires, and the population consisted of new graduates of all nursing educational system in Taiwan. The researcher took three schools out from each nursing educational system by simple random sampling. The research was conducted from April 15 2009 to May 22 2009 which distributed 498 questionnaires. Finally, 473 valid questionnaires were collected, and the valid response rate was 94.98%. The relationship between employment intension and work value was analyzed by Logistic regression.

Results:  The research found that, under controlling the demographic variables, the item of work value '' stable and avoiding anxiety orientation '' was the significant predictor to the employment intension, in other words, the higher scores of the item, the higher level of employment intension. It was also found that students who were interested in nursing got the higher level of employment intension.

Conclusion: Work value is an effective tool to predict the employment intension of new nursing graduates, and students who are interested in nursing could be recruited at entrance examinations.
