Description/Overview: In the new healthcare environment, success will be defined in terms of improving patient experiences, and the health of populations while reducing costs. The development of evidence-based practice (EBP) knowledge and skills, design of EBP infrastructures, and promotion of an invasive EBP culture is a strategy that can effectively propel organizations toward achieving these aims for patients, their families and society overall. The availability of a cadre of evidence-based practice mentors has been shown to impact organizations’ abilities to implement and sustain EBP to improve healthcare outcomes. The work and experience of a large, complex healthcare organization that has integrated EBP mentors will be presented and the returns on their EBP investment (ROI) will be discussed.
In the first session the definition, scope and responsibilities of the EBP mentor will be presented. In addition, the preparation and education of EBP mentors and their role in evidence-based problem solving at the point of care to improve care and outcomes will be discussed.
The second session will provide an example of EBP mentors in action in a real world clinical setting. An exemplar of an evidence-based, quality improvement initiative led by EBP mentors will be presented. The process involved in implementing and embedding the two innovative evidence-based practice change interventions that emerged as well as the outcomes of the projects will be described.
The third session will describe successful strategies for integrating EBP Mentors and the EBP process into the strategic vision and operational context within the nursing enterprise. Challenges faced and champions discovered will be highlighted.
