Description/Overview: In the early 1990s, a team of nurses from the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and University of Iowa College of Nursing developed a model for using research findings to promote quality care in health care settings. In 2001, authors revised the model to include the use of other types of evidence, and more specific information about pilot testing and implementing the practice change. The Iowa Model of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) to Promote Quality Care, or simply the Iowa Model provides direction for use of a systematic and scholarly process leading to safe, high quality health care. The Iowa Model is highly respected and widely used by interdisciplinary teams working in complex settings across the world. Nurses frequently report the Iowa Model outlines an intuitive process that makes the EBP process easy to navigate. However, as we have continued to use the Iowa Model locally and share it regionally and apply it globally, opportunities for further refinement of the model emerged. One example will be discussed; an EBP project related to Low-Dose Ketamine Infusions for Post-Operative Pain, which demonstrates issues related to key steps in the process (such as the need for a policy versus a clinical practice guideline and the complexity of implementation). In 2014, we conducted a mixed-methods descriptive survey of users’ experiences with the Iowa Model in a variety of settings and suggestions for refinement of individual steps. The results of this survey will be presented. Finally, revisions will be presented. The 2015 Revised-Iowa Model continues to outline an application oriented EBP process and shifts the focus from use of research to application of existing evidence for making the best clinical decisions and gives emphasis to implementation and sustainability for achieving best patient outcomes.
