Exploring the Teaching Self-Efficacy of Clinical Nursing Preceptors in South Taiwan

Introduction:

Clinical nursing preceptors were key person to new nurses, which can to help new nurses through the process of learning, orientation, and socialization to their working environment. This process instills essential professional skills, knowledge, and values. To provide effective teaching for new nurses to reduce reality shock, decrease early burnout, and enhance retention rate. and helps nurses become functioning members of the healthcare system. However, few studies have examined the factors of teaching self-efficacy in Clinical nursing preceptors.

Purpose:

The objective of this study were to understand the statuses of the teaching self-efficacy in clinical nursing preceptors.

Methods:

This study method applied a cross-sectional design using structured questionnaires, including demographic characteristics, and the teaching self-efficacy evaluation. A total of 200 questionnaires were distributed and 185 questionnaires were returned, with the recovery rate of 92.5%. there were 172 participants were recruited from two hospitals in south Taiwan through a convenient sampling procedure. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson’s correlations.

Results:

There are 57 items in the teaching self-efficacy scale, the results of this study showed that clinical nursing preceptors had an average score of 3.86 in the teaching self-efficacy. Five dimensions of the teaching self-efficacy, the score from the highest to lowest was harmonious interpersonal relationship, objectivity of teaching evaluation, maturity of personal characteristics, proficiency of professional knowledge and effective teaching strategies. The subjects scored the highest in Item 14, “I would encourage new nurse to seek for help actively”, the subjects scored the lowest in Item 25, “I will use multiple teaching strategies”. Personal characteristics including age, marital status, years of teaching experience, job titles, and the job ranking had significant relationships with the teaching self-efficacy.

Conclusion:

The results of this study can be provide reference to preceptor training courses of clinical nursing preceptor for clinical nursing managers and administration managers.
