Purpose: To explore the application method and effect of case-based learning in combination with directed debriefing in the experimental course of pediatric nursing.

Methods: Nursing undergraduates enrolled in Grade 2013 were selected as objects in this study. A new teaching method, case-based teaching in combination with directed debriefing was taken in the course of pediatric nursing. The teaching effect was compared with that of undergraduates enrolled in Grade 2012 who got conventional teaching. And the attitude to new teaching methods was investigated. Pediatric nursing is a professional core course in the course system of ability oriented nursing, including theory course and experimental course. The teaching methods of small group teaching and random grouping are applied into the experimental course. The students are divided into 4 groups and there are 7 to 8 students in each group. The contents of the course are composed with learning of theoretical knowledge and practicing of clinical skills. In order to cope with the trend of nursing professional training and meet with the need of people's health, teachers from teaching units such as experimental teaching center and clinical teaching center continue to carry out the reform of the experimental teaching of pediatric nursing.

Results: The final theory test scores of two groups show no statistical significance(P>0.05). Performance in the class of undergraduates enrolling in 2013 was better with statistical significance(P<0.05). Their attitude towards the new teaching method was satisfied. According the education of scientific research test method, the researchers select Class 2013 nursing undergraduates as research objects, and the total number is 287. There are 4 classes and 12 hours for each one in the experimental design.

Conclusion: Application of case based learning in combination with directed debriefing to course of pediatric nursing teaching of nursing students can promote the development of the comprehensive abilities of the nursing students, the teaching ability and the quality of teaching.
