Experience-based Learning in Nursing Education.

Abstract:

Purpose: The purpose of this study problem solving ability through the use of nursing process and analytical thinking skills was to (1) compare problem solving ability of nursing undergraduates through the use of nursing process and analytical thinking skills before and after they engaged in experience-based learning; and (2) compare the problem solving ability with the expected competency of nursing undergraduates.

Methods: One hundred and ten of third-year nursing undergraduates were purposely selected. They were enrolling in a practicum course of the 2016 academic year and were engaged in the experience-based learning for two weeks. The undergraduates were divided into two large groups consisting of 14 small subgroups. Data were collected and analyzed using one group pre and post-tests design. Two statistics, T-test dependent samples and one sample t-test, were obtained.

Results: The results showed that (1) the problem solving ability of the undergraduates is statistically higher after engaging in experience-based learning at α= .01; and (2) the problem solving ability statistically meets the expected competency at α= .01
