Promoting suicide prevention of stroke patients with lean thinking

Approximately 10%-65% of the population of stroke patients has suicide idea. Silent suicide idea often occurs when a stroke patient is treated without measures of suicide prevention. From this point of view, a suicide prevention of lean thinking among stroke patients is indicated. The main purpose of this study is to promote suicide prevention of stroke patients in hospitals, to improve the knowledge of suicide prevention and treatment of clinical staff, and to improve the screening accuracy rate of stroke patients with suicidal tendencies, so as to reduce the incidence of suicide among stroke patients.

From March to July in 2018, the nursing station started using distress thermometer evaluation for high risk patients at admission care assessment, making nursing care plan, executing nursing intervention, completing nursing record and handover, and proceeding quality management system’s cycle history of suicide prevention. These efforts resulted in completing analysis of effectiveness of distress thermometer and brief symptom rating scale to assess risk factors of suicide by using associated professional resources from the hospital and hosting focus group. With the accomplishment above, it is possible for the team members holding lean healthcare management education in association with the group of suicide prevention in the hospital, to keep investigating problems related to suicide prevention and provide advice for improvement.

Team members can not only improve the accuracy of screening for high-risk cases and implement suicide prevention notifications, but also ensure patient safety and provide a reference for clinical practice. Post-stroke suicide screening is an important part in the investigation after stroke. Suicide prevention interventions in stroke patients with lean thinking project showed evidence-based in clinical care to improve suicide prevention interventions in stroke patients by nurse. Ultimately benefit stroke patients, and also enhance nursing professional image and professional competence.

Suicide prevention studies regarding lean thinking between different bedside screening tools and provide better choices of bedside screening tools for suicide detection in stroke patients.
